What this means
An image that provides information needs a text alternative, often called alt text. It should communicate the useful meaning of the image. Important words in a poster or chart must also be available as text.
Passing examples
- A chart says 'Sales rose from 40 in June to 60 in July', with the full figures in nearby text.
- An event poster's date, venue, and booking details are available as readable page text.
- An image link has the name 'Apply for membership', explaining its purpose.
- A diagram's short description names what it shows, and a nearby explanation gives the essential details.
Failing examples
- An event poster has the only date and venue, but its description is 'image123.jpg'.
- An image link has no name, leaving its destination unclear.
- A chart's description says only 'chart' and none of its information is available as text.
- An image was replaced, but its old description still describes a different subject.
