What this means
Moving content can distract people or change before they finish reading. Content that moves automatically for more than five seconds alongside other content needs a way to pause, stop, or hide it, unless the movement is essential.

- A slideshow has a Pause control that keeps the current slide still.
- A scrolling news banner can be stopped using either a mouse or a keyboard.
- An automatically updating panel lets people pause updates or choose their frequency.
Failing examples
- A banner keeps scrolling with no stop control.
- A slideshow pauses only while the mouse stays over it, so keyboard users cannot pause it.
- A news panel keeps replacing text while someone reads and offers no control over updates.
Avoid flashing effects. A pause control does not make dangerous flashing safe.
