What this means
Instructions should name the thing a person needs to choose. Color, shape, sound, or position can be extra clues, but should not be the only clues. People may not see the same colors or page layout.
Passing examples
- 'Choose Send application' matches the button's name.
- 'Choose the green Save button' includes its name as well as its color.
- 'Enter the code shown under Booking reference' identifies the information by its label.
Failing examples
- 'Press the green button' gives no name or purpose.
- 'Fill in the box on the right' fails when the box moves on a phone.
- 'Continue when you hear the beep' gives no other sign that it is time to continue.
